The Treatment of Hyperlipidemia

Abstract
Hyperlipidemia is defined as an elevation in the concentration of cholesterol and or triglycerides in the plasma of individuals after a 12-hour fast. There can be no doubt about the role of hyperlipidensia in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. So the major aim in the treatment of hyperlipididemia is the prevention of premature atherosclerosis.
There are two components in the treatment of hyperlipidemia; Diet therapy and Drug therapy.
Diet therapy has four measures; reduced intake of saturated fat, increased intake of polyunsaturated fat, decreased dietary cholesterol, and weight loss. Although diet therapy is considered to be associated with minimal risk, the efficacy is limited.
As a result, many patients become candidates for drug treatment. Because drug therapy is often long term, physician must consider its efficacy and potential side effects and determine its suitability for a given patient.
